The well-known video page has beaten all others as the preferred social network for teenagers aged between 16 and 19. Google also has a good fan base (20%) compared to Instagram (16%), Tumblr (13%), SnapChat (12%) and Twitter (6%) among others. But this changes when we extend the age group.
This is one of the conclusions that Global Web Index has reached; they are a market investigation company that carried out a study among users in the United States and United Kingdom. Generally, 37% of those surveyed view Facebook to be the coolest among all the social networks.
But YouTube is not far behind with 22% of fans. And in fact when it comes to frequency of use it exceeds Mark Zuckerberg’s page. 81% of Internet users have logged in to this platform at some stage in the last month, this percentage goes down to 73% with Facebook.
When discussing instant messaging apps, Line was the one that grew the most last year. The Japanese tool managed to increase its users by 57% in 2014. Other tools that grew substantially during 2014 were Facebook Messenger (+53%), Snapchat (+45%), Instagram (+43%), Pinterest (+40%), WhatsApp (+37%), WeChat (37%) and YouTube (35%).
Going back to YouTube, its success among teenagers coincides with its 10th anniversary. Originally created by three PayPal employees in 2005 as a private platform for videos, a decade later YouTube has become the third non official TV channel and for more than 1000 million users worldwide it is their main channel.
According to Google, who have owned the platform for nine years, after purchasing it for 1.300 million euros, hundreds of million of visits are made daily to look at all kind of content. The number of users and hours spent on this site worldwide is increasing dramatically. The registered growth is of 50% year after year. And it is not surprising; 300 hours of video are uploaded every minute, YouTube is present in 75 countries and available in 61 languages. This is no coincidence as it can be accessed and viewed from any mobile device.
